Why Wear a Tie?
1. Even at relatively casual companies, ties are essentially required for almost every job interview. “In almost every situation, interviewers expect that male candidates wear a tie, business shirt and possibly a suit,” says Katrina McKenzie, an interview coach at Marymount University. “Being well-dressed won’t get you a job, but dressing suitably will eliminate one reason you might not get the job. If you look unprofessional, you’ll call your judgment into question.” Ties go a long way to establishing that you make good decisions and can present yourself as a professional. In addition, I would highly recommend wearing a quality tie whenever you’re meeting an important client or a business associate (particularly for the first time).
2. Neckties are all-but-required in formal occasions, such as weddings, funerals and dates in fancy restaurants. In addition, I highly recommend wearing a tie to dances, religious services, and any place you’d usually brush your hair before entering. If the setting is formal and/or stylish enough that you’d feel embarrassed about having unkempt hair, wearing a tie is probably wise and classy.
3. Quality silk ties make cheap suits and shirts look classy. By themselves, $30 shirts and $50 suits probably don’t look spectacular. However, a quality designer tie—such as a $25 Principessa Regale—can make the whole ensemble look stunning. Remember, the tie almost always commands more attention than the shirt and suit because it usually has the most eye-catching colors and is centered on your body. Besides your face, it’s the first thing most people will notice about you.
4. Ties are one of the only ways for guys to stylishly incorporate colors into their outfit, particularly in a relatively formal setting. Most solid color neckties (particularly in dark values) can be worn with a white shirt. In contrast, wearing a solid purple or solid orange suit would probably be seriously distasteful.
5. Strangers may take you more seriously if you are wearing a suitable tie. People respect professionals and companies are more likely to give extra consideration to people that dress like businessmen. Personally, I always wear a business shirt and necktie to the airport because I’ve found that it free seat upgrades and other nice perks. Ties can also help whenever you absolutely need to make a good first impression—for example, I’d recommend wearing a tie whenever you’re meeting with prospective landlords, discussing a prospective loan with a banker, trying to get into a nice club, doing a college interview, introducing yourself to a new client, etc.
6. Ties can help establish your key traits. In a job interview, you’d probably want to show hiring managers that you’re a precise, presentable professional. In a club, you’d probably want to show how stylish and fun you are. In any situation, a well-chosen necktie can show people how confident, intelligent, perceptive, sophisticated, mature and refined you are. Like your grooming, your choice of attire says a lot about you.
7. Neckties can dress shirts up or down, allowing you to save money on your wardrobe. For example, black shirts can be worn with red ties to clubs and dances or with gold ties to most job interviews. Your ties make your wardrobe more versatile. Additionally, since ties generally cost less than shirts, it’s usually easier to buy a new tie that allows you to wear a favorite shirt in a new setting than it is to just buy a new shirt altogether.
8. Self-respect. You brush your hair and shave before going out, right? Wearing a tie is simply the next level of grooming, style and decorum.
9. They set a good example for young men. Many male teachers and other professionals that work alongside boys are either required or strongly encouraged to wear neckties to model self-respect, maturity and discipline. If you work with kids and/or have any sons, working some neckties into your wardrobe can be seemly and classy.
Why You Should Have a Tie Rack
1. Tie racks make your mornings less stressful. You can see all of your silk ties at once and it’s easier to find a tie that matches the shirt you want to wear. Personally, I like placing the tie against the shirt to see if the tie matches and it’s much easier to do that if the ties are all in one place than if they’re scattered across every corner of the closet.
2. Tie racks keep your ties from getting wrinkled or crushed by other articles of clothing. Silk ties are some of the most delicate items in your wardrobe. Storing your neckties by themselves will help you keep them looking great for years. Good tie racks apply less pressure to a necktie’s surface and are less likely to cause a silk tie to stretch or tear.
3. Tie racks save space for your other clothing. If you can move ten ties from hangers to a wall-mounted tie rack, that will give you enough space for several shirts or a few suits. If you’re as enthusiastic about ties as I am and/or live in a small apartment, tie racks are more or less a necessity.
4. Tie racks save a lot of time. My wall-mounted tie rack took me only two minutes to screw in even though I’m not very good with screwdrivers. It saves me at least five minutes every week.
5. Cedar tie racks smell great. They also help ward off moths and look very classy.
6. A tie rack is a great investment. You can get some great necktie racks for less than $30. If a tie rack keeps even one silk tie from getting crushed by a suit or one shirt from getting ruined by moths, the tie rack will pay for itself.
7. Tie racks last for a long time. I’ve had my own tie rack for five years and it’s one of the only things in my house that I’m sure I’ll own 20 years from now.
8. Tie racks are versatile. For example, most tie racks can hold belts and scarves. I use the flat space on the top of my tie rack to hold cufflinks, car keys and a wallet. Some stand-alone tie racks can also double as a stylish piece of furniture for a room.
9. Some tie racks are phenomenal for small closets. Wall-mounted tie racks can be attached to the back of a closet door, to the back closet wall (right behind your shirts and suits), or even to a wall outside of the closet.
10. Tie racks generally make fine gifts. It’s much harder to miss somebody’s style with a tie rack than with a tie. Additionally, a designer tie probably costs $75 or more, but the best tie rack I’ve ever owned cost $20.
11. Tie racks are classy. Why do you wear ties? Probably to present yourself as classy and/or professional, right? Tie racks do the same thing for your home that ties do for your outfit.
If you’re looking for a tie rack, I highly recommend finding a tie rack at ties.com. So far, all of the customer ratings on ties.com for tie racks are a perfect five stars.
Honor America’s Freedom On July 4th By Wearing Patriotic Ties
For many, the Fourth of July comes once a year and brings along with it picnics, family gatherings, fireworks and fun. However, others relish this special day as Americans celebrate their freedom. A Silver Tie Stays Cool All Summer Long
No matter if you’re working long hours or taking a family vacation, silk ties can still come into play during the summer. A silver tie brings an element of shine and pizzazz to a man’s wardrobe. For the father going on a long deserved trip with his family, a silver tie is the perfect way to complete his outfit for a night out with his wife. For the businessman who finds himself at the office more than at his home, the days can seem to run together on hot, summer days, and a silver tie can break up the monotony and make a man feel refreshed and stylish.
Silk ties will make you appear professional and sophisticated, and silver is an especially cool choice for the summer. Attending summer conferences for work probably isn’t at the top of anyone’s list of enjoyable things to do in the middle of the year. However, using these opportunities to meet new people and make good connections can give you a positive outlook. Wearing a silver tie to these affairs will help you stand out among the crowd when you are introduced to potential clients or future employers. Consider one of Jos. A. Bank’s silk ties like this silver tie that is constructed of pure silk with a satin striped pattern in light blue and silver on top of black background.
For a more playful take on the silver tie, consider something like the Paisley Tie by Principessa Regale. It’s perfect for a summer conference or a night out on the town at a tropical destination.
Learn The Meaning Behind The Colors Of Men’s Ties
Because each color holds a meaning behind it and stirs up emotional responses, it’s important to think about this factor even when it comes to men’s ties. Understanding how to match an orange tie with blue pants or what colors are appropriate for certain events will make choosing your attire an easy task. This skill will also help advance your personal and business life since appearances affect our behavior and the responses we get from the people around us.
Simply knowing the meaning of each color of men’s ties will be much more helpful in life than you realize.
- Red evokes dominance, attention, power, passion and determination. Red men’s ties are often considered to be power ties when worn with dark suits.
- An orange tie symbolizes adventure, enthusiasm, success, courage and warmth. Often called “the happy color”, an orange tie can quickly brighten someone’s bleak day.
- Yellow is also known as a positive, playful color that is connected to optimism, confidence, alertness and optimism.
- On the other hand, dark brown men’s ties are seen as fall and winter accessories. Tan and beige, however, can be great for spring as brown is considered an earthy and informal color.
- Wear green and you will be seen as a person of prestige and vitality who is extremely successful because green represents prosperity and harmony. Just like bank notes are green in America and many other countries in the world, many men’s ties come in green on purpose.
