ARE CAPES SET TO SWEEP MENSWEAR?

Without reference to superhero iconography, could you see yourself incorporating a cape into your wardrobe? If you’re one to keep on the cutting edge of trends, you might want to consider it.

With the fall 2013 men’s shows behind us, we can really get a sense of the trends we have to look forward to next year. Mingled amongst the great colors, leathers, tweeds and plaids, we saw quite a few capes, skirts and even dresses.  While men’s dresses aren’t likely to catch on, some of the capes we spotted really hit the mark.

While not traditionally an American menswear staple, capes have a long history in European fashion and were used primarily to protect fine fabrics from the elements. However, today’s capes are meant to be powerful statements in your ensemble.

Designers worldwide including John Varvatos, Valentino and Saint Laurent felt compelled to make the claim that capes are back, delivering a variety of styles. I, for one, am whole-heartedly embracing this trend:
