Suit Vs Tuxedo – What To Wear On Your Big Day

Your wedding is a big day and you want to be looking, smelling and feeling like a million bucks.

There’s plenty of stress involved when it comes to organizing a wedding, from hiring a venue to ensuring that caterers are serving high-quality grub for everyone to enjoy.

When it comes to your outfit, there are a few choices of wedding attire but your two main options are between a tuxedo and a suit.

Choosing between the two can be a little tricky but. weighing up a tuxedo vs suit for wedding your beloved bride is easier if you know all of the style differences between the two.

We’ve put together this handy little guide to help you choose between a tux and a suit on your big day.

What is the difference between a tux and a suit

Even though tuxedos have modernized, there are still some distinct differences between a tux and a suit.

  • Details: The devil is definitely in the details when it comes to tuxedos; they have satin details such as a satin lapel, satin buttons and classic satin stripe on the outer pant leg. Suits usually consist of all the same material and the pattern is consistent throughout. The buttons on a suit will usually be created from plastic, bone or buttons covered in fabric.
  • Accessories: When you think of accessories for a tux, James Bond in Casino Royale comes to mind with that classic cummerbund, suspenders, dressy black bowtie and sometimes a waistcoat. It’s now acceptable to wear long neckties and high-stance vests with your tux, depending on how you want to mix and match your style. Suits usually look great with bow ties and neckties; also their versatility means that you can successfully dress them up and down with different accessories.
  • Shirts: When you’re rocking a tux, you’ve only got two options: a turndown collar shirt or a wing collar shirt in white. For suits, you can pretty much get away with any shirt (within reason.) That means you can sport a shirt in a solid color or pattern.
  • Footwear: It’s good etiquette to wear black patent shoes with tuxedos. For suits, you can wear Oxfords, Derbys, loafers and double monk strap shoes.

Should I Wear a Tuxedo or Suit for My Wedding?

Should I Wear a Tuxedo or Suit for My Wedding

It comes down to personal preference when choosing a tuxedo vs suit for your wedding. There are a few things to consider:

  • Time of the wedding: Tuxedos are super formal and considered to be evening wear. If your wedding is during the day then it might be a better choice to wear a dressy suit. If you have a wedding ceremony during the day but the wedding ends in the evening or at night, then a suit or tuxedo is a fine choice.
  • Wedding theme: Themes are quite prevalent in many modern weddings so you’re going to have to play by the rules. If you’re having a black-tie wedding, then you most certainly have to wear a tuxedo.
  • Cost: We understand that weddings can be costly endeavors and since tuxedos are occasional outfits, a suit might be more economical for you in the long-run. With a suit, you can get multiple wears out of it all year round by wearing it to different events. While a tuxedo is a great choice for your wedding, it will set you back around $700 – $1000 and that’s not including alterations which may cost up to another $100.
  • Your choice: It comes a lot down to personal preference when choosing what to wear to your wedding. If you want to wear something occasional and special then a tuxedo might be the perfect choice for you. Whether you decide on a tux or suit, always ensure that it fits well and you’re wearing the appropriate accessories and shoes with the outfit.
